  • 11/4 Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14 Highlights Cooking Safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths. Cambridge Fire Department urges Cambridge residents to practice safe cooking habits:

Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

Turn pot handles toward back of stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

For fire safety fun for kids, visit sparky.org.

7/17 Wildfires, Air Quality, and Health Several factors driven by climate change are increasing the intensity and duration of wildfires throughout North America, including Eastern Canada. Smoke from wildfires can travel long distances, affecting air quality far from the location of the fires. Eastern New England has been spared the worst of the wildfire smoke so far in 2023, but air patterns could change with little warning.

Wildfire smoke contains several air pollutants, including particulate matter (smoke particles), and hydrocarbons. The source of these pollutants (trees) results in many types of plant-based, sticky particles. Learn More

5/1 Avoid Contact with Alewife Brook Through May 23 Due to Potential Harmful Bacteria and Other Pollutants People and pets should avoid contact with Alewife Brook and parts of the Mystic River from May 21-23, 2023 due to the release of stormwater mixed with sewage into the river. The release of mixed stormwater and sewage—known as a “combined sewer overflow (CSO)”—is needed to prevent contaminated water from backing up into homes, businesses, and city streets. State regulations require local public health departments to notify the public when these discharges may create a risk to public health, including when a discharge lasts for more than 2 hours. Two CSO releases occurred in Cambridge early Sunday morning, May 21 that lasted more than 2 hours. Learn More.

10/28 The face mask mandate for Massachusetts K-12 public schools has been extended again. Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey C. Riley announced Tuesday, days before the mandate was set to expire on Nov. 1, that the requirement will now remain in place through at least Jan. 15, 2022.

10/6 The Cambridge School Committee voted last night to implement a recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Greer to mandate vaccines in Cambridge Public Schools for age-eligible students. This recommendation comes after the vaccination rate for 16-19-year-olds in Cambridge has stagnated at 48%. Cambridge Public Schools have done everything possible since schools reopened to keep students safe while ensuring their education continues. This measure, which follows guidance from doctors, is meant to continue the work of keeping students as safe as possible.

“After 18 months of masks, distancing, and Zoom, we have by far the most effective tool at our disposal,” said Mayor Siddiqui, who chairs the School Committee. “It is clear that if we are going to get to a place where the school is as safe as possible and our students can thrive, this mandate is necessary.”

Immunization programs for kids have been one of the most important public health initiatives in the last century, and mandates for all students have played a key role in their success in the U.S. It is clear from prior immunization efforts, and from what we have seen so far with the COVID vaccine, that mandates are by far the best way to maximize vaccination rates. At universities and workplaces, mandates have been successful at getting over the vaccine hesitancy hump.

In an announcement released yesterday, Superintendent Dr. Victoria Greer wrote, “We cannot sit by and let this virus destroy the futures of our young people, who have already experienced such a negative impact on their social, academic, and emotional development.”

By November 22, 2021, all age-eligible students must be vaccinated. Failure to obtain a vaccination will not result in exclusion from school, but will prohibit age-eligible students from participating in the following CPS after school extracurricular activities:

  • Athletics, including club and intramural sports

  • Student government

  • After School visual and performing arts

  • All school clubs that meet out of the school day

  • School-sponsored social events

The Superintendent’s Office will follow up with additional details on the process for providing proof of vaccination, as well as requesting medical or religious exemptions. See additional details here

Please direct any questions to Mayor’s Chief of Staff, Michael Scarlett at mscarlett@cambridgema.gov.

8/27 Mask Mandate The City of Cambridge issued an emergency order requiring that face masks or coverings be worn in indoor public places. The order takes effect at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021. It applies to everyone over the age of two years old, with exceptions in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines. “With the rapid rise of the Delta variant, we are issuing this mask order for indoor public places to reduce the spread of the virus and to protect those who live, work, learn, or visit our city. As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will take a data and science-informed approach to our pandemic response.”, said City Manager Louis A. DePasquale. https://www.cambridgema.gov/covid19/News/2021/08/emergencyorderrequiringuseoffacemasksinindoorpublicplaceseffectiveseptember3
